"This piece appeared as
part of a calendar for Graphic Arts News. The concepts were left to the
individual artists. This was intended as a sort of a vague critique of
the occasionally extreme, bizarre, convoluted theories sometimes produced
by archaeologists, paleontologists, astrophysicists, and other theoretical
scientists. The idea illustrated here is of a paleontologist hard at work
in theoretical research, while trying to ignore the real dinosaur watching
over his shoulder. The portrait on the wall is Darwin. "The medium is mostly watercolor pencil on hot press illustration board, with some airbrush. Watercolor pencil was great for drawing in all those detailed wrinkles in the skin, then blending them with a wet paintbrush later. — Jon Fraze |
