"This was the cover for a story on electronic surveillance issues. I'm actually surprised we had the nerve to do such an audaciously war-themed cover so shortly after 9-11.
    "The idea was to use only text and graphics to create a bold, ominous design. The headline text itself was kept simple and clear, but was set slightly askew, and given a stressed, torn-edge 'glow' to set it off from the background (see detail below). A menacing red gash cutting across the black background formed the only other graphic element." —Jon Fraze
