"This was the opening spread for a feature on security issues in the public network. The photo-illustration was intended to represent someone metaphorically breaking into the network.
"I chose to use dark, dramatic lighting with a photo of a black-gloved hand holding a flashlight to a keyboard, in a parody of a safe-cracker or burglar at work. The blur effect was added in Photoshop later. I was also responsible for tracking down additional spot art for many stories: in this case a news service photo of hacker Kevin Mitnick was appropriate to the subject. This piece is also a good example of the headline style I was using in the re-design: strong dramatic variations of size, constrainment of headline into simple geometric forms, combined when possible with an interaction with the photo or art element space."—Jon Fraze
