"This opening spread was created before our redesign, but is still a pretty fair example of my design goals. This uses a large opening photo illustration which interacts with the negative space and with the text area. The color palette of the graphics are echoed in the photograph.
    "The photo was altered from a stock image. I took digital photos of open collars and cuffs from various angles, and merged them into the photo in place of the heads and hands. With a bit more cloning I was able to turn it into a meeting of invisible board members, illustrating the 'absentee leadership' theme. ... "My main complaint is the headline text: editor Joan Engebretson repeatedly insisted on using a variety of fonts within single headlines in the belief that this was somehow 'good design.' I would rather have stayed with the magazine's headline standard font family. I also prefer longer headlines for story leads, since it creates more text design opportunities. These goals were later largely adopted by the publication." —Jon Fraze
